Rural Agripreneurs to Thrive in the Digital Economy

Rwentanga Farm Institute Digital Marketing Bootcamp

Agriculture remains the backbone of Uganda’s economy, employing over 70% of the population and serving as a major source of income for rural households. Yet one persistent challenge continues to limit the growth of many agricultural enterprises: access to markets. While many youth-led ventures have successfully developed quality products, reaching customers consistently and competitively remains a hurdle in an increasingly digital world. It is against this backdrop that the MUST-IUC-UCoBS Sub Project 5, through its commitment to youth employability, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer, is conducting a five-day Digital Marketing Bootcamp at Rwentanga Farm Institute.

The bootcamp brings together a vibrant group of entrepreneurs whose businesses were birthed and nurtured through previous entrepreneurship bootcamps. Over the past year, many of these ventures have moved beyond ideas into production and market engagement, demonstrating the power of entrepreneurship as a pathway to job creation and rural transformation. Participants include businesses involved in Black Soldier Fly production for fish, poultry, and pig farmers; tomato paste processing under Aroma Company; mineral lick production for livestock farmers; yoghurt processing; bakery and confectionery products; mushroom cultivation; charcoal briquette production; organic insecticides; waste management solutions; and banana plantlet propagation, among others.

Recognizing that production alone is not enough to guarantee business growth, the entrepreneurs have returned to sharpen one of the most critical skills for modern enterprises digital marketing. The bootcamp is designed to help participants position their products in the digital marketplace, build stronger customer relationships, and expand their market reach using technology-driven marketing approaches.

The training opened with an exploration of customer personas and customer journeys, helping participants deeply understand who their customers are, what motivates their purchasing decisions, and how businesses can effectively engage them at every stage of the buying process. This foundational knowledge is enabling entrepreneurs to move beyond simply producing products to strategically building brands that resonate with their target markets.

The first day concluded with an immersive introduction to Artificial Intelligence for business content creation. Participants engaged in practical sessions using emerging AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok, and Meta AI to generate marketing content, develop business stories, create promotional messages, and improve communication with customers. For many participants, it was their first experience harnessing AI as a business growth tool, opening new possibilities for affordable and efficient marketing.

As the bootcamp progressed, participants were introduced to AI-powered digital marketing strategies, social media platform optimization, content calendar development, and the use of digital marketing analytics and key performance indicators. Led by Dr. Sarah Nabachwa and Mr. Francis Kamuganga, the sessions combined theory with hands-on practice, enabling each business to establish and optimize functional digital marketing accounts. By the end of the sessions, participants had moved from having little or no digital presence to owning tested and operational platforms capable of reaching wider audiences.

Day Three brought a creative and highly practical dimension to the training. Facilitated by Bright Kusasira of Kreative Campus, participants explored the art of storytelling, branding, and content development. Entrepreneurs learned how to transform everyday business activities into compelling stories that connect emotionally with customers and build trust in their brands. The sessions also included practical training in smartphone photography and content creation, equipping participants with affordable techniques for producing high-quality visual content using devices already in their pockets.

What makes this bootcamp particularly exciting is that it is not focused on hypothetical business ideas. These are real enterprises with real products already serving customers. The training is therefore directly contributing to increased competitiveness, market expansion, and sustainability of youth-led ventures. By integrating entrepreneurship, agriculture, technology, and digital marketing, the bootcamp is empowering rural innovators to take advantage of opportunities in the digital economy while creating jobs and improving livelihoods within their communities.

As the week unfolds, participants continue to gain practical skills that will help them transform promising local enterprises into visible, competitive, and scalable businesses. The journey from innovation to commercialization is often challenging, but with the right digital tools and strategies, these entrepreneurs are positioning themselves to reach new markets, attract more customers, and create lasting impact far beyond their communities.
