What happens when you replace theory with action, and exams with real-world problem solving? On 23rd April 2026, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) answered that question in the most powerful way possible through the inaugural EntreFest.
Born out of a bold shift in the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, where the traditional research requirement was replaced with an Entrepreneurship Practicum, EntreFest became more than just an event. It became a stage for transformation. For months, students had been immersed in a hands-on journey of innovation identifying real community problems, designing solutions, understanding customers, and building business models. EntreFest was the moment where all that learning met reality.
The atmosphere was electric. Students stood not as learners, but as founders. Innovators. Problem solvers. Each team carried with them not just an idea, but a solution rooted in real challenges faced by their communities.
One team turned bakery waste into opportunity transforming damaged cakes into affordable, nutritious animal feed for farmers. Another reimagined safety for boda boda riders by converting plastic waste into protective face shields. A group of bold thinkers tackled water insecurity with a ceramic filtration system capable of removing 99.9% of harmful germs. Others explored innovations in clean energy, healthcare, security systems, food safety, and sustainable fashion.
This was not guesswork. These were ideas shaped by real needs, refined through customer discovery, and presented with conviction.
And the support in the room was just as powerful.
University leadership reaffirmed a clear message: the future belongs to creators, not job seekers. Students were encouraged to see themselves as employers, innovators, and drivers of economic change. The commitment was evident not just in words, but in action with promises of mentorship, startup support, and continued investment in student ventures.
Then came a game-changing moment. A representative from Equity Bank stepped forward, not just as a guest but as a partner. With funding opportunities, strategic programs, and a commitment to walk with young entrepreneurs from idea to scale, the message was clear: your ideas matter, and the ecosystem is ready to support you.
As the pitches concluded, the energy only intensified. The best teams were recognized, but the real victory went beyond awards. Every participant walked away with something far more valuable clarity, confidence, and the realization that their ideas could create real impact.
Behind the scenes, a bigger vision is taking shape. Through UCoBS Project 5, MUST is building a full entrepreneurship ecosystem complete with innovation labs, funding pathways, mentorship networks, and digital platforms to showcase student ventures to investors and partners. EntreFest is just the beginning.
Because this is what the future of education looks like. Not students waiting for opportunities but creating them. Not ideas sitting on shelves but solving real problems. Not graduates chasing jobs but building enterprises. EntreFest 2026 was not just an event. It was proof that when young people are given the right tools, the right mindset, and the right support they don’t just learn entrepreneurship. They live it.
